AN UNSTOPPABLE POWER Acts 2:1-41 The Book of Acts - Them The Book of Acts - Us The Event Acts 2:1-13 - The event is not really about Pentecost. - The event is the fulfillment of the Promise of the Holy Spirit. (Wind and Fire are both symbols of the Holy Spirit v. 4 - “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit”) - Jesus promised when He left the Holy Spirit would come. (Jesus taught this in the Gospel of John - chapters 14-16) John 16:5-8 - John 16:13-14 - Speaking in tongues here is different than “tongues” in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. (The word for “tongues” here means languages or dialects - see 1 Cor. 12 & 14) - The people heard in their own “dialect” a witness about Jesus! (God desires every tribe and tongue to hear the Gospel!!!) - What does this mean? (v. 12) The Explanation Acts 2:14-16 - This is a fulfillment of prophecy. (Peter quotes from the Old Testament - Joel 2 - Psalm 16) - This is a fulfillment of the promise. - The promise of a person. v. 22 - Jesus proving that He is God’s Son—Lord and Messiah (see v. 36) - The promise of a plan. v. 23 - Jesus willingly giving His life in place of ours - The promise of a purpose. v. 24 - Jesus conquering sin, death, and the grave! Once for all! - What are we to do? v. 37 The Application Acts 2:37-41 - Trust Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins. (Be baptized as a declaration of your faith in Jesus) - Be filled with the Holy Spirit and witness to those who need to hear! Next Steps: Them: What does this mean? & What are we to do?
