Putting Our Position Into Practice
• Series: Colossians
JESUS ABOVE ALL PUTTING OUR POSITION INTO PRACTICE Colossians 3:12-17 Today we are focusing on the positive aspect of being clothed with Christ—what we “put on.” Being Clothed with Christ is shown our personal life: Colossians 3:12-14 We put on the goodness of Jesus: (v.12) These character qualities describe Jesus and should be what others see in us. - Compassion: genuine care and concern for others. - Matt. 9:36 - Kindness: demonstrating thoughtfulness to others through action. - John 4:26 - Humility: being selfless and valuing others more than yourself. - Phil. 2:5-11 - Gentleness: power under control. - Matt. 11:29 - Patience: a response to others that is confident in God’s work. - 2 Peter 3:9 We put on the graciousness of Jesus: (v.13) This is how we practice the character qualities listed in verse 12. - bearing with one another: gives us an opportunity to enjoy unity as we demonstrate love and patience. - forgiving one another: gives us the opportunity to pursue unity in Christ. - we will have grievances with others—but we handle those differently than the world. We put on the godliness of Jesus: (v.14) This is how it all comes together because love is the greatest of all. - God is love - 1 John 4:7-8 Being Clothed with Christ is shown in our church life: Colossians 3:15-17 We are one body that is ruled by the Peace of Christ: (v.15) Jesus is the head of the church and the giver of Peace. - John 14:17 - The word “rule” here has the idea of an umpire making the call. - The body of Christ should demonstrate a spirit of peace and thankfulness. We are one body that richly abides in the Word of Christ: (v.16) The Word of God should “dwell”—take up residence—and be the basis for all our teaching and admonishment. - Teaching: sharing the word for understanding and application in our life. - Admonishing: being trained by the Word (it could be encouragement or reproof/correction) A redeemed person should be a rejoicing person. - Singing is the gift of the saved and we are to sing unto to the Lord. We are one body that retains focus in the purpose of Christ: (v.17) The “whatever” of our life should be for the Glory of God. - We must live out our faith. Not just words—but also deeds. - We must represent Jesus well. Not misrepresent His name. - We must be thankful. Not forgetting all He has done for us. Next Steps: How well do I represent Jesus: - in my personal life? - in my church life?
