A Weary World Rejoices THE PROMISE OF HIS PERSON Luke 2:8-20 We have a God who keeps His promises! Luke 2:8-20 - Isaiah 9:6 JESUS—in His humanity, shows us four things that will give us hope and joy in a weary world: 1. Jesus shows us how to go to Father and receive guidance for this life. Wonderful Counselor “pala’ ya’ats” Isaiah 11:2 (NET) The Lord’s Spirit will rest on him. - a Spirit that gives extraordinary wisdom. - a Spirit that provides the ability to execute plans. - a Spirit that produces absolute loyalty to the Lord. Isaiah 28:29 (look at the verse in the CSB first) (NET) - This also comes from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, who gives supernatural guidance and imparts great wisdom. - Jesus never did anything in his earthly life that was not directed by the Father. - He only did what He saw Father doing. (John 5:19) - He only did what pleased Father. (John 8:29) - Jesus was intentional about getting alone and listening to Father. (Vance Havner, “if we don’t come a part—we will come apart”) 2. Jesus shows us how to allow God to fight the battles we will face in this life. Mighty God “el gibbor” - the God who fights our battles - the God who is victorious - the God who is unlimited in power and might - Jesus faced all the battles and temptations we will ever face and he relied on Father to bring victory. Hebrews 5:7-10 3. Jesus shows us how to place our trust in God who will always be with us. Eternal / Everlasting Father “avi ad” Father of perpetuity Father until: - the one who produces all things - the one who directs all things - Jesus trusted God even in difficult times and knew God was with him. 1 Peter 2:21-23 4. Jesus shows us how to live in God’s perfect peace in a fallen world. Prince of Peace “sar shalom” sar - ruler, chieftain, commander, ruler of rulers shalom - completeness, soundness, welfare, tranquility, contentment. Sar Shalom The Invincible One who destroys all enemies. - Jesus lived in a peace that the world does not know because it comes from following God’s plan.
