The God Who Lives in Us THE SPIRIT’S WORK OF SANCTIFICATION, Part 1 John 16:12-16 Sanctification—the Holy Spirit’s lifelong process by which we are conformed into the image of Jesus. - We should desire to be more like Jesus each day we live. (Romans 8:29) - GROW The Spirit of Truth works in us this process of sanctification in at least two ways: 1. The Word of God 2. The Voice of God The Word of God is truth that speaks into our lives. Jesus prayed that we would be sanctified by the truth. (John 17:17) The Holy Spirit worked to inspire the Scriptures. (2 Peter 1:19-21 2 Timothy 3:16-17) -The Word of God is “GOD BREATHED” (that is what inspired means) - The Holy Spirit is the Breath of God. (gives life) - The Bible is a living book! - (Hebrews 4:12) The Holy Spirit is at work instructing us through the Scriptures. - Psalm 119 is a powerful statement about the Word of God and what it will do in our life. (Psalm 119:11 Psalm 119:105) Seven truths about the effect of the Word of God in our life from: - Psalm 19 v. 7: Truth: “the instruction of the Lord is perfect” Effect: “it renews our life” Truth: “the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy” Effect: “it makes the inexperienced wise” v. 8 Truth: “the precepts of the Lord are right” Effect: “they make the heart glad” Truth: “the command of the Lord is radiant” Effect: “it makes the eyes light up” v. 9 Truth: “the fear of the Lord is pure” Effect: “it endures forever” Truth: “the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous” Effect (v. 10): “it makes us desire it more than gold and shows us how it is sweeter than honey” v. 11 Truth: “God’s Word warns us” Effect: “an abundant reward is given to those who obey” The writer of Proverbs says in chapter 4:22 that God’s Word “is life to those who find it” Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to conform you to the image of Christ? The goal of our life is not just information about the Word of God, but also transformation by the Holy Spirit speaking through the Word of God! (2 Corinthians 3:17-18) Next Step: Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to work a transformation in my life by spending time in God’s Word?
