Shema "The Heart" Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Luke 10:27 Shema means "hear" or "listen" What does it mean to love the Lord your God with all your heart? -Heart = καρδία - the seat of a man’s collective energy, the focus of personal life, the seat of rational as well as the emotional elements in human life. - Ultimately the way that we love the Lord with all of our heart is by submitting our heart first to God. . Submit our desires to God (focus of personal life) . Submit our decisions to God (man's collectives energies) . Submit our emotions to God (emotional elements in human life) - We must submit our desires to God. .. Our hearts are broken. Jeremiah 17:9 .. One of the worst things we can do is follow our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 - If you were to write down your desires, how many would impact the kingdom vs. how many would impact only self? How do we have hearts to glorify God? Psalms 37:4 - Do you take delight in the Lord? - We must submit our decisions to God. - Our hearts are sinful. Proverbs 3:5-6 How then do we submit our decisions to God? Psalms 119:11 - Stop focusing on not sinning, focus on Jesus! - We must submit our emotions to God. - We live in a society that is driven by emotions. - We care called to steward our emotions but oftentimes our emotions steward us. - We will never be able to submit our emotions to God if we are controlled by our emotions.
