The Beatitudes "Blessed are the Humble" Matthew 5:5 #BLESSED “If you could say in one word what you want more of in life, what would that be?” - The #1 mentioned missing element: Happiness Matt 5:1-5 You see, these Beatitudes build upon each other: CONDITION: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” CONTRITION: “Blessed are those who mourn” CONTROL: “Blessed are the humble" What does it mean to be humble or meek? Humble: (Praus) = Meek, humble, gentle - not being overly impressed by a sense of one’s self-importance. Humility is when we trust in God’s goodness in every circumstance and therefore have no need or desire to resist or dispute our own self interests. Matt 11:28 Psalm 37:11 What does it take to be humble? Trust in the Lord. - Psalm 37:3 Take Delight in the Lord. - Matt 6:25, 31-34 Commit your way to the Lord. - Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him... Be silent and wait expectantly. - Be silent before the Lord and wait expectantly for him... Abandon anger. - Refrain from anger and give up your rage; do not be agitated. The humble deny self. - Phil 2: 3-8 - Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking or yourself less. The greatest enemy of humility is pride. - James 4:6 The Proud Vs The Humble The Proud are self-righteous; they look down on others. The Humble esteem all others better than themselves. The Proud have an independent, self-sufficient spirit. The Humble have a dependent spirit; they recognize their need for others. The Proud must prove that they are right. The Humble are willing to yield the right to be right. The Proud are self-protective of their time, their rights, and their reputation. The Humble are self-denying, understanding that their time, rights and reputation belong to Jesus. The Proud have a drive to be recognized and appreciated. The Humble have a sense of their own unworthiness; they are thrilled that God would use them at all. The Proud claim rights; they have a demanding spirit. The Humble yield their rights; they have a meek spirit. The Proud are self-conscious. The Humble are not concerned with self at all. What is the reward for humility? - “Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth. - The greatest reward for humility is intimacy with God. - Numbers 12: 3, 7-8 Next Step: Give the controls of your life completely over to Jesus. Hold nothing back.
