The Beatitudes - Pt. 2 "Those Who Mourn" Matthew 5:4 The Reason We are to Mourn - Being poor in spirit leads us to become those who mourn. - Jesus used the strongest of nine words for sorrow (mourning) found in the New Testament. - penthoúntes (related to death or separation) - We mourn over the sin that is in our life. Psalm 32:3-5 Psalm 32:1-2 James 4:8-10 - Mourning over our sin is a mark of growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18 - We begin to see sin in the same way God sees it. Romans 7:14-25 - We continue to grow in the awareness of our sinfulness. 1 John 1:8-9 ..the closer we get to God the more we see our sin - ..what we did not see as sin in our life, we now see it as God sees it. The Result of our Mourning - God promises to comfort us and bring blessing in our life. ..The word “comforted” is from the Greek word parakaleō John 14:16 -Through confession and repentance God brings comfort and joy into our life. Psalm 34:18 - God desires to use us to be comforters to those who are in sin. Matthew 7:1-5 - We are to help bring comfort to others in the same way God brought it to us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Next Step: When was the last time you were broken over sin in your life? - Realize your need, confess your sin, and receive the comfort God desires to give to you.
