Luke 18:3-8 vs. Luke 18:9-14 The audience is those who trust in themselves that they are righteous and look down on everyone else. The Two Characters · The Pharisee Luke 18:11 He uses "I" 5 times and implies it 4 other times. The WHOLE prayer is about his righteousness. Look at the heart of the Pharisee. · The Tax Collector Luke 18:13 He didn't try to boast in his righteousness because he knew he had none to offer. The Response Luke 18:14 - Justified means to be made righteous before God by receiving the gift of salvation. - You cannot make yourself righteous. - Your righteousness means nothing. - Isaiah 64:6 - Your personal, self-righteousness separates you from God! - We cannot look down on those who need Jesus because they are different than us in political agenda, sexual preference, cultural customs or beliefs.
