“The Storyteller" Persistent Widow Luke 18: 1-8 Whatever Jesus says is important. When Jesus repeats something we need to really pay attention. Today's parable has a "twin" (Luke 11:5-8) Two Main Characters: - Corrupt Judge - Persistent Widow The Widow's Adversary Luke 18: 2-5 “Widow that kept coming to him.” vs. 3 “Yet because this widow keeps pestering me” vs.5 - pestering = κόπον means bothering, a laborious toil, being fatigued by what is happening. - wear me out = ὑπωπιάζῃ με - to hit under the eye, to tease or annoy, to make weary - a beating. Luke 18: 6-8 What happens next? vs. 6-8 - Jesus shows the contrast between God and the corrupt judge. - “Will God not grant justice to His elect…” vs. 7 If God went through the work of bringing you into a relationship with Him, would He not also listen to your prayers and requests. “I tell you he will swiftly grant justice…” vs. 8 Does this mean that He will answer any prayer we ask of Him if we just pray about it enough? - So then what do we pray for? “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on Earth?” vs. 8 What is the rubric in which He grades faith on? A people who persistently pray for God to move! Next Steps: - Think about what you are asking God for. - Pray at all times, and don't give up.
